Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States.

Did you know that one person dies every 36 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease?

Additionally, heart disease costs the United States about $219 billion each year from 2014 to 2015. This includes the cost of health care services, medicines, and lost productivity due to death.

Health and Wellness tips for your work, home and life—brought to you by Trinity Health Center

Heart disease is a common term for coronary artery disease. It is the number one cause of death in both men and women over the age of 60 in the United States.

Causes
Heart disease is caused by atherosclerosis—a buildup of plaque in the inner walls of the arteries—which narrows, slows or blocks the flow of blood to the heart.

Risk Factors
Controllable risk factors for heart disease include the following:
  • High blood pressure
  • High LDL cholesterol
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Using illegal drugs, such as cocaine

Warning Signs
The symptoms you experience depend on the type and severity of your heart condition. Common signs and symptoms of heart disease include the following:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Heart palpitations
  • Weakness or fatigue

Call your doctor if you begin to have new symptoms or if they become more frequent or severe.

Treatment
The goals of treatment for heart disease are to relieve symptoms, control or reduce risk factors, stop or slow further damage to the arteries, and prevent and treat cardiac events. Treatment includes several options:
  • Self-care and prevention
  • Medications
  • Procedures to open blocked or narrowed arteries or to bypass them
  • Cardiac rehabilitation

Self-care and Prevention
  • You can follow a healthy lifestyle to help prevent heart disease:
  • Get regular medical check-ups.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Take medications as prescribed.
  • If you are at a higher risk for heart disease, ask your doctor about low-dose aspirin therapy.
  • Watch for signs of diabetes and see your doctor if you have any symptoms.
  • Follow a diet low in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol.
  • Limit sodium intake to 1,500 to 2,400 milligrams per day.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Manage stress by practicing relaxation techniques.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation. Check with your doctor to find out if and how much you should drink.

Dear Friend of Trinity Health Center,

Before Trinity Health Center opened for the uninsured patients in DeSoto County on October 13, Board members and the medical staff dedicated the building, equipment, and staff to the medical and spiritual healing of patients and to the glory of God. And God brought the patients…

• The very first patient was a middle-aged female with urinary symptoms who said through tears after being treated, “I have been praying for someone to provide treatment for my health care needs. Without Trinity Health Center, I don’t know how long I would have had to endure this situation…”

• One middle-aged male came to Trinity Health Center as a result of a growth on his shoulder that prohibited the ability to do his normal job. The staff was able to not only get specialized medical help for his original condition, but also treat and control his blood pressure. During one of his last visits he said, “Thank you, thank you! I always have been seen so quickly and treated with such care here at Trinity Health…”

• As a result of not being able to obtain treatment from other clinics, a young male said he was, “So thankful,” to receive early treatment to prevent further complications from his new diagnosis of diabetes.

Would you help give the Gift of Health by donating to Trinity Health Center?
These patient stories and testimonies underscore the importance of providing medical and spiritual health care to those in need within our county! Would you provide the Gift of Health by donating to Trinity Health Center?

Your Wellness Matters: Diabetes

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death in the United States. More than 34 million Americans have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them have not been diagnosed.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body is able to turn food into energy. The food you eat is broken down into sugar (glucose) and released into your bloodstream. As your blood sugar goes up, your pancreas releases insulin. This allows the blood sugar to enter your body’s cells for use as energy. A person with diabetes doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t properly use insulin. There are two main types of diabetes:
· Type 1 diabetes occurs when your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. This type of diabetes is usually diagnosed in children, teens and young adults, but it can develop at any age.
· Type 2 diabetes occurs when your cells don’t respond normally to insulin, which is known as insulin resistance. Out of the 34 million Americans with diabetes, approximately 90%-95% of them have Type 2 diabetes.
Picture
What are the symptoms of diabetes?
Diabetes symptoms vary depending on how much your blood sugar is elevated. People with Type 2 diabetes may not initially experience any symptoms. However, those with Type 1 diabetes may experience severe symptoms that can develop in a short amount of time.

Signs and symptoms of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes may include:
  • Thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • The presence of ketones in the urine
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing sores
  • Frequent infections (e.g., gum, skin or vaginal infections)
Picture
How can you address diabetes?
In order to properly manage diabetes, it’s important to do the following:
  • Monitor your blood sugar—Carefully monitoring your blood sugar is the only way to make sure your blood sugar is within your target range.
  • Undergo insulin therapy, if prescribed—Many people with diabetes need insulin therapy to survive. There are multiple types of insulin available. Depending on your needs, your doctor may prescribe a mixture of insulin types to use throughout the day and night.
  • Eat healthy—Enjoy a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains, avoiding foods high in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates.
  • Stay physically active—Exercise lowers your blood sugar level by moving sugar into your cells where it’s used for energy. It’s important to aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day.

Where can I learn more?
If you are experiencing symptoms of diabetes, contact your doctor. For more information on diabetes, visit the American Diabetes Association website at www.diabetes.org.

In an effort to share the faces behind our organization before we open this August with our community, we're shining a spotlight on our Planning Team, Volunteers, and Board Members who have worked tirelessly to get Trinity Health Center open to provide health and healing to the working uninsured and underinsured neighbors in DeSoto County.

This week, we're thrilled to spotlight our Board Member, Dr. Vivian Lo.

Why did you become involved with Trinity Health Center?
My friend Vance Daly, who is also on the board, approached me about my interest in participating. I was ecstatic. I have always volunteered and contributed back into the community in where I work and live. This is the perfect way for me to serve by combing my love for volunteering and medicine. All the Glory to God for blessing me with this great opportunity.

What excites you most about Trinity Health Center's mission and purpose?
The underserve population in our county deserves the right to health care just like everyone else. Being able to provide that will benefit so many people in our community. I feel blessed to be part of this organization.

What are some of your favorite places in our County to enjoy a healthy lifestyle?
Healthy lifestyle comes with making healthy life choices. Walking at least 30 mins a day is the bare minimum that I strive for, if I’m not at work. Ordering a healthier option when I go out to eat is another conscious choice to make. I support all local businesses. In Hernando, I love LadyBugg and Bazar. I love to walk down the trails around my house. One of my new favorites is the Johnson Creek green trail.

What is your favorite quote or bible verse?
Isaiah 41:10 - God strengthens you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. God has promised us His strength. He will never give you a trial you are unable to handle.
